The area: Crinan is famous for its unique canal, built to transport fishing vessels inland to Lochgilphead. With traditional cottages, boats, canal locks, lighthouse and boatyard there are plenty of painting subjects here. Surrounded by wooded hillsides, the naturally peaceful bay known as ‘Crinan Harbour’ is sheltered and tranquil. Crinan is located at the end of the beautiful Add estuary which affords stunning views across the autumnal gold and russet marshes with the ancient monuments of Kilmartin Glen just 3 miles inland. There are many coastal walks and areas of interest for non-painters within easy reach of the house.

Painting activities: We will begin with workshops and demonstrations of the specific techniques and approaches used when painting on location. Each day will focus on a different location and aspect of painting ‘en plein air’. In case of poor weather we have arranged for the use of 3 beautiful indoor spaces with views across the bay and plenty of natural light.

The weather: Although good weather cannot be guaranteed at this time of year, I have happily painted outdoors in Crinan in November, December and February in recent years. The sheltered position of the bay and the general climate in the region mean that the worst of the winter weather usually stays away from here. Average temperatures for October are 6-12C. I would expect the weather to be changeable and perhaps showery. Though tricky to deal with practically, the ever-changing light and cloud is what makes this part of Scotland so beautiful!

Equipment: A full list of required equipment will be issued upon receipt of your booking.
