This is going to be amazing!

Join me every Monday afternoon in my ‘Virtual Studio’ for 5 weeks to develop your skills, meet new people and get your week off to a positive, creative start!

Each week we will tackle a different painting challenge. I’ll give live demonstrations of methods and exercises to improve your skill and understanding of a specific aspect of painting. There will be a suggested project or challenge for the week which will encourage you to stretch your creative muscles and grow in new directions. Our focus will be on working from direct observation (rather than from photos) and we will concentrate on developing your perception, decision making, colour harmony, surface quality and general design choices. You will decide what to paint; I will offer suggestions for exercises to build your understanding and awareness of creative principles. After each session you’ll have a whole week to practice and employ your new skills in whatever medium, theme or subject you choose before we meet again for the next lesson. I’ll be available for individual feedback during the week and you will have the option to include your work in a group review session the following Monday. All you will need is a computer or ipad and your usual painting equipment.

This course is ideal for painters in any medium who want to develop their current skills with suportive guidance and encouragement . You will have an option to sign up for a further 5 weeks after the initial period and we will keep this thing rolling as long as there is a need or demand for it!

How it works

We will meet live on Zoom from 2pm -5pm BST on Mondays. Sessions will include slide lectures, live demonstrations, group chats and individual feedback. The group will be small, and classes will operate in ‘real time’ just as though you have joined me in person. Then you will have the whole week to complete an assignment. You may upload your work to a private group chat where I will give feedback on each person’s work before the next session. You will all be able to see everyone’s feedback and can contribute your ideas as well. We will meet again on Zoom the following Monday. Each class will be recorded and available for participants to watch later if you are unable to join at that time.

What you will need:

  • A laptop, Macbook, PC, iPad or tablet

  • Your usual drawing and painting equipment - easel, brushes, paints, canvas/boards/paper etc

  • Use whatever colours you are familiar with and try to make sure you have a broad range of colours. I like to use a ‘double primary palette’ of Cadmium Yellow Lemon, Cadmium Yellow Golden, Cadmium Red Light, Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine Blue, Phthalocyanine blue/cerulean plus plenty of white paint if you’re using opaque media.

  • A notebook and pen for making lots of useful notes during slide talks and demos

  • A sketchbook for working out ideas

Worried about studying online?

It’s ok– included in the course fee, we will offer remote IT support and guidance for everyone and we’ll all have lots of fun and laughs as we work it out together. For those who don’t know him already, my lovely Mark is a freelance IT consultant specialising in online solutions for businesses. He offers remote technical support and training for businesses around the world – and now he’s going to help us all to learn together online! With your permission he can remotely access your PC or Mac and set everything up for you, then he’ll teach you how to use it.

It’s going to be brilliant! Before our first session, we’ll meet with coffee, cookies and computers for a practice session and simple tutorial on using the online learning programme. It’s all remarkably easy, I’m amazed at how quickly I’ve learned to use it!
